Intimacy exercises for busy couples

The hardest part of intimacy in a long relationship is not desire. It is the gap between wanting to be close and having no idea how to start.

These three take under fifteen minutes. None of them require anyone to be in the mood first.

1. Six seconds

A proper hug lasts about one second. A six-second hug does something different — it is long enough that the body stops bracing.

Do it once a day. Do not talk during it. It will feel strange for the first week.

2. The three questions

At the end of the day, ask each other:

  • What was the best part of your day?
  • What was the hardest?
  • What do you need from me tonight?

That last one is the important one. The answer is allowed to be "nothing".

3. Two minutes of eye contact

Sit facing each other, knees touching, and look at each other for two minutes without speaking. Set a timer.

It is uncomfortable. It is also the fastest way back to someone that exists. Most couples report the second minute is completely different from the first.

Why these work

None of them are about sex. That is precisely the point. They rebuild the ordinary, low-stakes closeness that desire actually grows out of — and they work on a Tuesday, when nobody has any energy left.
