Why body-safe materials actually matter

"Body-safe" is not a regulated term. Anyone can print it on a box. So here is what we actually look for.

Porous vs non-porous

Porous materials — jelly rubber, PVC, cheap TPE — have microscopic holes. Bacteria settles into them, and no amount of washing gets it back out. Non-porous materials have a sealed surface. Wash them and they are genuinely clean.

We stock four:

  • Medical-grade silicone — soft, non-porous, holds temperature beautifully
  • Borosilicate glass — completely non-porous, can be warmed or cooled
  • Stainless steel — smooth, weighty, easy to sterilise
  • Body-safe ABS — used for hard housings and handles, never for internal surfaces

Phthalates

Phthalates are plasticisers that make cheap PVC soft. They are also endocrine disruptors, and they leach. We do not stock anything phthalate-based, at any price point.

Silicone and silicone lubricant

One practical rule: silicone toys and silicone-based lubricant do not mix. The lubricant degrades the surface. Use water-based instead.

If in doubt

A quick test on a soft toy: press a fingernail into it and hold for a few seconds. A quality silicone will spring back with no mark. Cheap jelly will keep the dent.

It is not a perfect test, but it will save you from the worst of the internet.
